For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 8:38–39

NOTHING MEANS NOTHING

Romans is a book of timeless teachings. What a joy and comfort it is to read about the work of the Spirit in our lives as believers and how nothing can separate us from the Love of God! But there is even more. Don’t stop there!
Paul lists multiple things that cannot separate us from God’s love. But in v.28 he tells us that God actually turns and uses them for our good and His glory: “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8 tells us that there is progression in what God accomplishes. He predestines, calls, justifies, and glorifies. And once that chain reaction is started, there is no separating us from God’s love.
Romans 8 talks about the work of the Spirit in our lives:
  • sets us free from the law of sin and death
  • shifts our mindset from death & fear to life & peace
  • makes those led by the Spirit God’s sons and daughters
  • testifies that we are co-heirs with Christ
  • intercedes on our behalf when we pray and do not know what to say
It is incredible that once the Spirit of the Lord dwells in us, NOTHING can separate us from God’s love. According to these verses, the list below is what cannot separate us – and the list includes EVERYTHING!
  • death
  • life
  • angels
  • rulers
  • present things
  • future things
  • powers
  • height
  • depth
  • any created thing
What a joy it is to have this confidence that nothing can separate us from God’s love. This Christmas season, let us remember the huge chasm that was between us and God’s love that was bridged by Christ. He came to mend all brokenness and make a way for us to be reunited with God. And now we will never be separated from that love!
